The Work of the Council

The Liberian Shipowners’ Council (LSC) was established in 1974 to ensure that Liberian-flag shipowners could operate their vessels to the highest practical standards of quality, safety, and environmental protection while retaining the cost-effective advantages of the open register system. Not all flags are created equally, and LSC continues to be the leading advocate for the open register system and for protecting the shipowners’ right to choose the flag under which it operates.

As the collective voice of Liberian-flag shipowners, LSC articulates and advocates shipowner positions to the Liberian Administration, as well as to other government regulators and to relevant stakeholders in an effort to mitigate and manage potentially negative impacts from regulatory changes while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and environmental protection.

LSC is an international, independent, not-for-profit New York Corporation that is managed by shipowners for the benefit of shipowners. LSC enjoys a close and cooperative relationship with the Liberian Registry and is a Full Member of the International Chamber of Shipping.

LSC Members represent all sectors of the shipowner community, including but not limited to, oil tankers, product tankers, chemical tankers, orange juice carriers, latex carriers, gas tankers, containerships, reefer ships, general cargo ships, bulk carriers, car carriers, livestock carriers, heavy-lift vessels, deep-water drilling rigs, offshore support vessels, research vessels, and passenger ships.
